Snare is the most difficult because its the soul of your track and any unsubtle fakery will be very obvious. I've tried blending multiple different samples - one for sub kick, one for attack and one for tone (all easily done in trigger) and yeah its still a slog. I find that the samples have WAY too much sub and attack and I endlessly scroll through them looking for the "perfect" one and with a few exceptions never do.

Even just fully replacing the kick (the easiest drum to replace IMO and the one that is done most often in pro mixes) is a struggle. I hear mixers on youtube making it work all the time (modern metal drums ARE in many cases, 100% samples) but I can't seem to duplicate their results. They poke out in an unnatural way and I say that as a guy who is mostly doing rock mixes where you want loud, punchy, in-your-face drums. I find it VERY difficult to get fully replaced drums to sit in the mix. There's definitely an art to it and one that I have yet to master.įor instance completely replacing your drums will in most cases make your drums sound like EZ drummer - that is to say FAKE. The plugin works great but its not a silver bullet for bad drum recordings. I use Trigger quite a bit also on old poorly recorded drums tracks. Isn't the Slate just used as a plugin in most cases? In other words lining up the trigger to the original drums should be automatic without having to move anything? Hopefully that makes sense. Just hoping for a solid trigger with good sounds that works well considering. At this point I'm looking for a relatively quick fix on some old material that I don't want to spend a ton of time on.

SD3 has a superb feature where you can do all the drums at once in the same instance and then export a midi file with all the instruments automatically mapped to the kit. Alternatively, you can route from trigger to your drum program directly. For every drum track you want to convert to MIDI you'll have to set the note and then merge the midi files together. You can to play the song through to cache the midi and then you can drag it onto your project. Trigger is also cheaper.Įxporting MIDI in Trigger is cumbersome though. I get false triggers from SD3 that I can remove with the Trigger. Trigger does seem to do a better job of dealing with bleed. Superior Drummer 3 is the better program for this though apart from the gate, which Trigger wins hands down for me. The included sounds are pretty good and you can create a midi file if you want to hook it up to a drum sampler, like SSD5 (mentioned above). It works well and has a good gate for removing bleed.
